How will the UK cups recycling initiative reach an effective scale so quickly?

Recycling requires scale, which in turn requires a wide collection network. From 1st January 2018, the agreement with ACE UK to collect and recycle paper cups will deliver 382 new collection points for used cups, located in 97 local authorities across the UK, with a further 33 collection points scheduled during the next phase. How do you deliver a wide collection network overnight?

We are able to achieve this scale so quickly because the agreement allows paper cups recycling to piggyback on the existing collection system used for beverage cartons. This latest effort builds on the work already done across the industry to increase recycling points in other locations such as in-store collection points in high street coffee shops, single site initiatives and working with waste collection service providers such as Simply Cups and Veolia.

The companies signed up to the agreement include six leading members of Pack2Go Europe operating in the UK – Huhtamaki, Benders Paper Cups, Dart Products Europe, Seda Group, Stora Enso & International Paper Foodservice Europe – as well as the distributor BUNZL Catering supplies and the following branded food and beverage service chains: Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, Greggs, McDonald's, Nestlé, Pret A Manger and Starbucks.

The full details of the cooperation will be unveiled at “The Reaching 4 Recycling, Calling 4 Collection Conference 2017” on 9 November.
